Easy Super Bowl Party Menu
Are you thinking about hosting a Super Bowl Party? Maybe you’ve been thinking about it, but worried it will be just too much effort. And it’s always on a Sunday, and you have to go to work the next day right? And who wants to spend the whole weekend cooking to get ready? Or cleaning up afterwards?! My Easy Super Bowl Party Menu will not only provide awesome recipes, but I've also included a food preparation schedule for you at the very end!
This easy super bowl party menu is your ticket to a great game day, with delicious, easy to prepare food, that will cover appetizers, salad, a main dish and dessert. The recipes take very little time to prepare and serve, leaving lots of time for poker, football pools, even tossing the football around in the backyard before kickoff! Now remember I’m a Canadian gal, so it needs to be a fairly mild winter for that to happen in early February. And I’ve never experienced the fun and excitement of a tailgate party, but it is on my bucket list!
So back home I’ve attended many Super Bowl parties and I’m sure you have too. Typically, the menu was chips and salty snack foods; chili that was so spicy and full of garlic that you couldn’t eat it; maybe some garlic bread; some garlic meatballs – well you get the idea. But somewhere along the way I got the football fever (remember John Elway?) I really love to watch it on TV and cheer my favorite team!
So my super bowl party menu started to include a variety of dishes and experiments. One year we barbecued a turkey – that was really good, but took such a long time to cook and there was lots of cleanup afterwards. Salads and cold cuts go over well too. But this year I’ve refined the menu, pulling out some tried and true favorites that are real crowd pleasers, have amazing flavours, are budget friendly, and make up in no time.
And I’m even including a menu prep schedule. Remember I promised time for poker and football right?

You can buy great guacamole from your favorite specialty food store - I'll leave that up to you. Just in case you want to make your own.....here is our recipe. You can give it lots of heat or just a little.
2 - 3 large avocados mashed
juice of one fresh lime
3 roma tomatoes sliced finely
1 medium red onion chopped finely
3 - 5 jalapenos - sliced very fine
2-3 cloves of fresh garlic - minced
2 tsp chopped fresh cilantro
Salt and pepper to season
Prepare your ingredients as listed above and mix everything together - serve immediately with tortilla chips.
Slow-cooker Pulled Pork
Best cuts for pulled pork
There are lots recipes for pulled pork. Some recommend the pork butt, some the pork shoulder and you can even use pork tenderloin. I like to use the shoulder – you can get a good sized one – around 4-6 pounds, it fits in the average sized slow cooker (8 quarts) and is reasonably priced at the butcher or grocery store.
Once your pork shoulder is cooked, and drained, following my recipe, you need a premium BBQ sauce to bring out the flavour of the pork.
In our home that means our own special homemade BBQ sauce. So here is the recipe, just for you. It’s so easy to make, you will always want to have lots on hand – for barbecuing any time of the year. The hickory smoke flavour is perfect for pulled pork. Double the batch so you have lots of sauce for these yummy pulled pork sandwiches!
1 cup smoke flavoured BBQ sauce (hickory works well)
1/4 cup ketchup (your favorite)
1/4 cup molasses
4 tbsp. butter
2 tbsp. vinegar
2 tbsp. lemon juice
1 tsp. dry mustard
2 tsp. worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp. hot pepper sauce (like tabasco)
Preparation (about 10 minutes)
Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and simmer on med-low for 10 minutes
Let cool and pour into glass jars.
**You can double the recipe which is what I do and it will make two pints.
Directions for Pulled Pork - Serves 6- 8 hungry football fans!
1 4 to 6 lb pork shoulder (or bigger - depends on the size of your crowd)
2 cups of water
Salt and pepper
3-4 whole cloves
2 chopped cooking onions
2 pints of Best BBQ Sauce (recipe is here!)
1 dozen crusty rolls or ciabatta buns
Season the pork shoulder with salt and pepper, and add to the slow cooker with the water, onions and garlic.
Set the slow cooker setting to low – 8 hours.
Once the timer is finished, drain the pork shoulder, and put it back in the slow cooker pot. Using forks pull it apart, shredding all of the meat - put the meat in the refrigerator in a tightly sealed container until 2.5 hours before game time!
Take the meat out of the refrigerator and put it into your slow-cooker. Stir in Best BBQ sauce
Turn it on high and let it cook for 1-2 hours
Come and get it! Place large servings of pulled pork on your favorite crusty roll, ciabatta bun, sourdough rolls, add a big scoop of Creamy Coleslaw either on the sandwich or on the side – that’s a personal choice!
Best Creamy Coleslaw
My Mom used to say the secret to the best coleslaw was adding enough onion! Coleslaw can take many forms but the tangy sweetness in this recipe is always great with outdoor BBQ, smoked meat and our slow cooker pulled pork. It comes together in minutes and you can serve it again the next day.
One medium sized head of green cabbage
2-3 small cooking onions
2-3 medium carrots
1 1/2 cups mayonnaise or your favorite salad dressing
2 tbsp. sugar
Salt and pepper
Pinch of paprika
Cut the cabbage into chunks and shred in your food processor – but pulse only, so that you get a coarse grind.
Chop the onion and the carrots in the food processor as well, chopping both finely.
Place into a large mixing bowl, add the sugar, salt, pepper, paprika and mayonnaise and blend well.
Sprinkle with paprika and place in refrigerator until ready to serve.
Blueberry and Cherry Hand Pies
These are so easy your kids can make them for you the day before the big game and will be a yummy addition to your super bowl party menu! I just discovered frozen puff pastry a short time ago. Yes, I know welcome to the 21st century! But being a scratch baker, I couldn’t imagine that something frozen and packaged could taste as good as something that I could prepare from scratch. Boy was I wrong.
1 or 2 packages of frozen puff pastry
1 can of blueberry pie filling
1 can of cherry pie filling
1 egg yolk – beaten
Icing sugar & water – to make the glaze.
Defrost the puff pastry in your refrigerator overnight. Separate the dough into two squares (the brand I use does this for you)
Spread a piece of parchment paper and a little flour to make rolling easy.
Cut the pastry into small squares – like the picture shown here.
Place the small square of puff pastry on the baking sheet you will use.
Spoon the blueberry filling in on the one side of the square – leaving enough room so that you will be able to fold over the dough
Fold the dough over and pinch the edges closed. I like to press the edges with a fork
Brush the pastry with an egg yolk wash and then sprinkle with sugar.
Repeat until finished and do the same for the second square of puff pastry, using the cherry pie filling.
Bake at 375 F for 15-20 minutes – until the pastry is flaky and golden.
Let cool before serving as the filling will be very hot! Using a squeeze bottle, squeeze the icing sugar glaze over the top.
Triple Threat Chocolate Brownies
These are the easiest and most delicious brownies I have made yet!
Yep, we are going to use a mix. That’s the base, and then we’ll add some extra chocolatey goodies. Ok?
Your favorite brownie mix
½ cup white chocolate chips
½ cup dark chocolate buttons
Place the mix and the ingredients required in a bowl and mix according to instructions.
Stir in the chocolate chips and chocolate buttons.
Smooth into a greased 9 X 9 square pan and bake according to the instructions.
Remove from the oven to cool.
Cut into squares and drizzle the chocolate sauce over all. How much you use is up to you!
